WTO DG faces scrutiny for availing of controversial Trust Funds (PRIV)

The WTO Director-General, Ms Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala, faces the prospect of enhanced transparency requirements for availing of controversial Trust Funds that could surge following the WTO's 12th ministerial conference (MC12) that includes a partial agreement on fisheries subsidies, new areas such as WTO reforms, and attempts to legitimize informal plurilateral initiatives on digital trade, investment facilitation, disciplines on MSMEs, trade and gender, and environment.

Eduardo Reyes, originally from Puebla in central Mexico, was offered a 40-hour work-week contract by his recruiter and his employer in the United States, but ended up performing hundreds of hours of unpaid work that was not authorized because his visa had expired, unbeknownst to him.
