Trade : Trump administration's trade war pushing US into quagmire? (PRIV)

China on 28 April dismissed United States President Donald Trump's claim that Chinese President Xi Jinping called him, while the US Treasury Secretary reportedly said that Beijing has the responsibility to de-escalate the ongoing tariff and trade war even though it was caused by the Trump administration, which now seemingly finds itself in a quagmire, according to analysts and media reports.

The United Nations Secretary-General, Mr Antonio Guterres, on 28 April urged countries not to "let our financing for development ambitions get swept away" against the backdrop of the worsening trade war that has hit "the most vulnerable countries and people" the hardest.

UN : Merchandise trade dynamism expected to fade in 2025 - UNCTAD (PRIV)

The late-2024 and early-2025 up-tick in global trade was driven in part by front-loaded orders ahead of newly announced tariffs, and this momentum is expected to fade - or even reverse - over the year as new tariffs come into effect, according to UN Trade and Development (UNCTAD).
