GATT: THREE DEPUTY DIRECTORS-GENERAL NAMED

Geneva 15 July (TWN) -- GATT Director-General Peter Sutherland announced Thursday the appointment of his three deputies called for by the Contracting Parties in their decisions and actions leading to his own appointment.

The three named by Sutherland were: Anwar Hoda from India, Warren Lavorel from the United States and Jesus Seade from Mexico.

Till now, GATT had two posts of Deputy Directors-General. One, occupied till his retirement by Madan Mathur from India, has been vacant for over a year now. The second post was occupied by Charles Carlyle from United States who retired at the end of June.

The third post was created in June, at the time of Sutherland's appointment, in terms of the understanding spelt out at that time by the chairman of the GATT CPs, to strengthen the GATT's research capabilities in the new areas of its concern.

Hoda is currently Special Secretary (Trade Policy) in the Ministry of Commerce in India and before occupying that post has been in the Ministry before dealing with GATT and trade policy questions.

Warren Lavorel has been the US coordinator for the Uruguay Round.

Seade is currently the Mexican permanent representative to the GATT.

He has been chosen out of a field of more than half a dozen candidates from the Latin American region.
