Trade : USTR expresses concern over WTO DG appointment process (PRIV)

A spokesperson for the Office of the Unite d States Trade Representative (USTR) on 8 October expressed sharp "concern" o ver the decision by the chair of the World Trade Organization's General Council (GC) to formally commence the appointment process for the WTO's next Director-General, saying emphatically that "this action was taken based on the Chair's assumption of convergence, rather than consensus."

China on 8 October initiated dispute settl ement proceedings against Turkiye at the World Trade Organization over Ankara's decision to impose additional tariffs on imports of electric vehicles (EVs) and certain other passenger vehicles originating in China, a development that s uggests China's continued trust in the WTO's dispute settlement system even though it currently remains dysfunctional.

"I am convinced that the security crisis, th e rule of law crisis, and the governance crisis that Haitians are enduring can be res olved," Volker Turk, the UN High Commissioner for Human Rights, told the 57th sessi on of the UN Human Rights Council on 8 October.
