Trade : "Confessionals" begin in new stage to select WTO Director General    (PRIV)

       A new stage of the process to select the next Director General of the WTO got underway this afternoon when General Council chairperson Ambassador Amina Chawahir Mohamed started consultations with individual Members to rank their preferences among the four contenders for the post.

Development : The Wolfowitz coup at the World Bank    (PRIV)

       Although many thought it was a cruel practical joke when Paul Wolfowitz's name was first floated to head the World Bank, this was no April Fool's prank. Last Thursday, the executive directors of the World Bank approved the key architect of the Iraq war as president of what is supposed to be the world's largest development agency.

United Nations : UN approves war crimes prosecutions in Sudan    (PRIV)
       (IPS, New York)
       The UN Security Council decision to refer those accused of war crimes in Sudan to the International Criminal Court (ICC) should be logically followed by a multinational intervention to stop the ongoing genocide in that country, say African activists and US human rights groups.

       A group of lobbyists representing five leading energy companies is stepping up efforts to persuade the US Congress to enact further industry deregulation before a key energy bill is introduced on April 5.

St Kitts-Nevis : Collapse of sugar sector leaves bitter aftertaste    (PRIV)

       The European Union says that it will give St. Kitts-Nevis $3.9 million to ease the pain of the tiny Caribbean nation's reluctant decision to abandon its three-century-old ailing sugar industry.

Argentina : Economic growth doing little to reduce rich-poor gap    (PRIV)
       (IPS, Buenos Aires)
       The steady economic growth experienced by Argentina over the past two years has brought the unemployment and poverty rates down from record highs.

Environment : French finally confront Chernobyl risks    (PRIV)
       (IPS, Paris)
       The French government concealed the enormous risks from radioactive clouds in the weeks following the explosion at the Chernobyl nuclear plant in April 1986, new evidence claims.
